MASTER 200 GRT (Inland and Near Coastal Routes), 112-Hours – An USCG approved license training course for those mariners wishing to obtain either a Master 200, 100, or OUPV near coastal license. Classroom based instruction. This is training course will satisfy the examination requirements of 46 CFR 10.205(i) for original license issuance, 10.209(c)(iii) for renewal, and 10.209(f) for re-issuance of a Master of Steam or Motor Vessel NMT 200, 100 GRT and or OUPV license. (Course pending USCG-NMC approval)
MASTER 100 GRT (Inland and Near Coastal Routes), 80-Hours – An USCG approved license training course for those mariners wishing to obtain either a Master 100 or OUPV near coastal license. Classroom based instruction. This is training course will satisfy the examination requirements of 46 CFR 10.205(i) for original license issuance, 10.209(c)(iii) for renewal, and 10.209(f) for re-issuance of a Master of Steam or Motor Vessel NMT 100 GRT and or OUPV.
MASTER 100 GRT (Inland and Near Coastal Routes), 129-Hours – An USCG approved, greatly expanded and highly detailed 129-hour license training course. This course is intended for those mariners wanting more than the standard Master 100 tons license class.
Seating in this class is limited. This course is focused on providing license candidates with maximum instructor-student contact time, in-depth Navigation Rules discussions, and underway (on-the-water) practicum covering terrestrial navigation, ship handling, vessel safety procedures, and watch-keeping practices. This course is offered only in the Puget Sound area.
This is training course will satisfy the examination requirements of 46 CFR 10.205(i) for original license issuance, 10.209(c)(iii) for renewal, and 10.209(f) for re-issuance of a Master of Steam or Motor Vessel NMT 100 GRT (excepts oceans) and or OUPV (excepts oceans).
Assistance Towing, Auxiliary Sailing Endorsements (if eligible), and FCC MROP are also included in the course.
This course offers both classroom instruction with 16 hours of underway practicum with in-class license written examinations and instructor graded practicum assessments. All materials and vessel time included. This course is only offered over a period of twenty (20) continuous weekdays (no weekend or evening training sessions) during a single four (4) week period.

OUPV (6-Pack ~ Inland and Near Coastal Routes), 63-Hours – For those mariners wanting just to obtain an Operator of Un-inspected Vessel (OUPV) Permit only. This is straight forward and rewarding class for various water-based businesses such as fishing and river guides along with commercial ecological tour and parasail operations. This license may be upgrade to Master 100 with our 24-hout Upgrade OUPV to Master 100 license training course within one year of completion of the OUPV course.
This is an USCG approved training course satisfying the examination requirements of 46 CFR 10.205(i) for original license issuance, 10.209(c)(iii) for renewal, and 10.209(f) for re-issuance of an OUPV license. License candidate will receive either inland or near-coastal routing based on their sea time and experience.
AB UNLIMITED, 56-Hours – An USCG classroom based course satisfying the written examination of 46 CFR 12.05-9 for the “Deck and Navigation General / Deck Safety” and “Deck General / Rules of the Road” examination modules for any ABLE SEAMAN endorsement and the practical (knot tying) examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.05-9 for any ABLE SEAMAN endorsement . In general an Able Bodied Seaman Unlimited is mid-level experienced skilled crew on board the vessel. The Captain, Engineer, Mate, on duty supervises him or her.
All instruction and written license examinations are completed in class. All training materials included. Classes offered in convenient multiple evening, weekday, and weekend formats.
COMMERCIAL ASSISTANCE TOWING ENDORSEMENT, 4-Hours – An USCG approved license endorsement course for currently Coast Guard licensed Masters wishing to engage in commercial assistance towing. This is training course will satisfy the examination requirements of 46 CFR 10.48(b) for an endorsement to any license up to Master NMT 200 GRT.
All instruction and written license examinations are completed in class. All training materials included. Classes offered in convenient single-evening and one-day formats.
AUXILIARY SAIL VESSEL ENDORSEMENT, 4-Hours – An approved license endorsement course for currently Coast Guard licensed mariners wishing to operate inspected sail vessels which carrying more than 6 passengers. This training course will satisfy the examination requirements of 46 CFR 10.205(1)(b) for Sail Auxiliary Sail Endorsement to any license up to Master NMT 200 GRT. All instruction and written license examinations are completed in class. All training materials included. Classes offered in convenient single-evening and one-day formats.
MASTER 100 or OUPV LICENSE RENEWAL, 8-Hours – A Master and or OUPV license renewal course for those currently Coast Guard licensed mariners lacking the required sea time since their license’s last issuance for automatic renewal but still within the USCG allowed one (1) year grace period after the date of expiration. This is an USCG approved training course satisfying the examination requirements of 46 CFR 10.209(c)(iii) for renewal of any deck license endorsed for service of NMT 100 GRT. All instruction and written license examinations are completed in class. All training materials included. Classes offered in a convenient one-day format.
OUPV to MASTER 100 tons (Inland – Near Coastal), 24-Hours – An USCG approved license training course for those OUPV who wish to upgrade to Master 100 tons. This training must be completed within one-year of issuance of original OUPV license.
FCC MARINE RADIO OPERATOR’S (MROP) Permit Element 1 Examination for Original License – This service is delivered by our instructors acting as a FCC Commercial License Designated Examiner for the COLEM, Elkins Institute, a division of BFT Training Unlimited, Inc. This is authorized MROP license testing and grading session only. No instruction or study guide provided.
All FCC required license application forms (605 and Schedule E) are provided along with the required electronic FCC license submittal.
Individual MROP license only examinations are offered daily on a pre-arranged basis.
FCC MARINE RADIO OPERATOR’S (MROP) Permit Element 1 Examination for Original License – This service is delivered by our instructors acting as a FCC Commercial License Designated Examiner for the COLEM, Elkins Institute, a division of BFT Training Unlimited, Inc. This is authorized MROP license testing and grading session only. No instruction or study guide provided.

FCC MARINE RADIO OPERATOR’S (MROP) Preparation Class and Examination for Original License – This is a MROP license training class plus in-class FCC Element 1 examination for all mariners. Instruction and examination delivered by our instructors acting as a FCC Commercial License Examiner for the COLEM, Elkins Institute, a division of BFT Training Unlimited, Inc.
All FCC required license application forms (605 and Schedule E) are provided along with an electronic FCC submittal service of all required documents.
Two (2) to three (3) hours of detailed professional test preparation and study guide review provided prior to the required Element 1 examination.
All instruction and written license examinations are completed in class.
We offer convenient scheduled public or customized company - group – individual classes. All license training materials and examination fees included in the cost of this course.
Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV)
This license allows the operator to carry up to six (6) passengers on an un-inspected vessel (UPV).
- Minimum age 18 years.
- 360 days on Inland waters, (1 day equals 4-plus hours underway in a 24 hour period) counted from your 15th birthday.
- 90 of the above 360 days within the last 3 years.
- Near Coastal endorsement requires 90 days of the 360 in near coastal waters. Allows operation of un-inspected vessels up to 100 miles off shore.
- Social Security card
- Three character references.
- Current (within 12 months) First Aid/CPR card.
- Current (within 12 months) medical examination.
- Current (within 6 months) DOT approved drug screening.
- Birth certificate.
- Current photo identification card.
- Suggested Courses: Master 100 (M100-83 or M100-129) or OUPV-63, Assistance Towing.
Able Seaman
The sea service requirements for the different levels of Able Seaman are:
- Able Seaman (Unlimited) - A total of three years service (1,080 days). All of this time must have been on vessels over 100 gross tons.
- Able Seaman (Limited) - Eighteen months (540 days) service on board vessels of 100 gross tons or more.
- Able Seaman (Special) - Twelve months (360 days) service on board vessels greater than 65 feet in length.
- Able Seaman (OSV) - Six months (180 days) service on board vessels over 15 gross tons.

Commercial Assistance Towing Endorsement
The Assistance Towing 200 GRT endorsement is required for any currently licensed Master assisting a disabled vessel for a fee.

Master 200 - 100 GRT (Near Coastal)
This license is required to operate USCG inspected vessels carrying more than six (6) passengers.
- Minimum age 19 years.
- Proof of US citizenship
- 360 days on Inland waters, (1 day equals 4 plus hours underway in a 24 hour period) counted from your 15th birthday.
- 90 of the above 360 days within the last 3 years.
- Tonnage is based on 90 days service on largest vessel with at least 45 days of that within the last 3 years.
- Near Coastal endorsement requires 360 days in near coastal waters of 720 total days. Allows operation of USCG inspected vessels 200 miles off shore.
- Social Security card.
- Three character references.
- Current First Aid/CPR card.
- Current medical examination.
- DOT Urine Drug screening.
- Birth certificate.
- Photo identification card.
